Equal parts Elvis '68 comeback and Paris '68 riots, Prince motorcycle ride and Che motorcycle diary, Univision and unionism, El Vez is "the Mexican Elvis" in every sense that matters—that is, the showbiz sense. Los Angeles punk vet Robert Lopez obviously loves Yanqui/Anglo pop but not American power, which makes his richly ironic Vegas-style rock y roll extravaganza perfect for the holidays' lubricated mix of social impulses and kitsch. Flanked as always by the lovely El Vettes, with enough pop musical references to fill a book, he's backed this time by surf-rock openers Los Straitjackets, who dress like Mexican wrestlers and have as much flair for all things Christmas (or Mex-Mas) as El Vez himself. 18+.
