Wall-to-Walker

For those who have wanted a crash course in all things Walker Art Center, this is the day to do it. Part Free First Saturday, part Walker After Hours, and part concert event, this 10-hour open house is loaded with things to do for kids, foodies, film junkies, and music heads. The Big Event, a.k.a. family-friendly hours, will be from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. and will feature hands-on gallery tours, an art-making activity where children can fill a box they bring from home with treasures they make themselves, and short films on toys from spinning tops to Mickey Mouse dolls. At 1 p.m. jazz cellist Erik Friedlander will give a sneak-peak performance of his show later that evening. Attractions for grownups include the local artist gift mart, chocolate sampling, and special appetizers, cocktails, and other menu items at 20.21 Restaurant, Gallery 8 Cafe, and the Walker Pub. After 3 p.m. things get a little more mature. At 4 p.m., 7 p.m., and 9 p.m. guests can pay $10 to check out screenings of the best British advertising, then bring their ticket stub over to the in-museum pub for one dollar off special British ales and drinks.
Sat., Dec. 5, 10 a.m.-8 p.m., 2009
