Unknown Prophets (CD-Release)

Ask a Twin Cities hip hop fan at the beginning of the decade who the next local name to blow up might be, and there wouldn't be a shortage of candidates: maybe Slug, or Brother Ali, or DJ Abilities -- or Unknown Prophets (pictured), the group that all those aforementioned names gave guest-spot honors to on 2000's underappreciated debut full-length World Premier. While those other names managed to represent Minneapolis on a wider scale to an international hip hop underground, Unknown Prophets were comparatively treated as though their name was their destiny -- yet they also became cult favorites who made up for in no-gimmicks indie rap bonafides what they lacked in trendy buzz, and have a discography stretching back a dozen years to attest for their support and durability. This headlining First Avenue show -- moved from the Entry, possibly due to a much larger crowd than anticipated -- celebrates the release of their new album Le System D, a rock-tinged push towards an advancement of their subterranean style. Kentucky conscious/conceptual rap favorites CunninLynguists complete what should be an underground preservationist's dream bill. With Grieves & Budo, Looptroop Rockers, Tunji, DJ Espada, DJ Anton. 18+
