Studio 54 Party

"Disco will never be over," Matt Keeslar's manic pop-culture philosopher Josh declares in Whit Stillman's 1998 film The Last Days of Disco. "It will be misrepresented and caricatured and sneered at, or -- worse -- completely ignored. People will laugh about John Travolta, Olivia Newton-John, white polyester suits and platform shoes... but disco was much more, and much better, than all that. Disco was too great, and too much fun, to be gone forever! It's got to come back someday. I just hope it will be in our own lifetimes." He was, of course, right -- they're not called discos anymore, but there's still nightclubs where the beautiful people can go to hook up and drink and dance to heavy thumping 4/4 rhythms. Downtown Minneapolis's Spin Nightclub is one of those places, and tonight they're paying homage to the most notorious nightclub of them all -- the coke-fueled, tax-evading, celebrity-strewn Studio 54. Assuming you don't get turned away at the door, expect to reconnect with all those classics by Chic, Donna Summer and Gloria Gaynor (plus maybe some First Choice, Salsoul Orchestra and C.J. & Co. if the DJ really knows his stuff). Also expect people in white polyester suits and platform shoes dancing like John Travolta and Olivia Newton-John. 18+. (Photo by Zeitfixierer)
