In the Heights

This iteration of composer/conceiver Lin-Manuel Miranda's musical comes to town while a parallel production continues to draw crowds on Broadway; success at the box office has also equaled trophy hardware in the form of multiple Tony awards and a Grammy. The big buzz seems to be the result of Miranda's infectious tunes, combining Latin rhythm, hip hop, and contemporary pop with nods to the complexities and charms of old-school show tunes. The plot concerns New York's Washington Heights, and the push-pull between changing times and the textures and traditions of the old days. It's a left-field sort of hit, part of a welcome trend away from prefab franchise musicals. While most of the reviews accuse it of sentimentality, in the next breath comes an admission of being won over by its exuberance and heart. Let's weigh in on the side of exuberance and heart.
