Those who have seen previous Hardcover Theater adaptations such as A Princess of Mars and The Sea-Wolf recall the spiky sense of discovery these shows provided. Truly, it was difficult to imagine such out-of-fashion authors as Edgar Rice Burroughs and Jack London rendered with such passion and vitality (along the way making the argument that they were ripping good storytellers). This time out, Hardcover tackles H. Rider Haggard's She, which tells the story of a lost world controlled by a mysterious woman with supernatural powers, who may or may not be more than 2,000 years old. Writer and director Steve Schroer has a sharpshooter's knack for locating the weird and the compelling in ostensibly hoary stories; odds are he's shined this one to an eerie glow.
Thursdays, Saturdays, 7 p.m.; Sundays, 3 p.m. Starts: Nov. 7. Continues through Nov. 22, 2009
