After 20-some years, Bob Schneider is pretty much an institution in his adopted hometown of Austin, where he's led a succession of bands that have run the stylistic gamut from rock to funk to bluegrass. Outside of Texas, he's inspired a cult following primarily as a singer-songwriter known for quirky, free-flowing lyrics, a classy baritone voice, and a strong, melodic sense centered on the pop-rock realm but flitting as far afield as jazz and Latin. His new Lovely Creatures (Shockorama/Kirtland)—whose sleek, radio-friendly production is courtesy of Kelly Clarkson producer Dwight Baker—is mostly concerned with love, from the giddiness of its arrival ("40 Dogs [Like Romeo and Juliet]"), to gazing at the pieces when it's shattered ("Changing Your Mind," a solemn but gorgeous duet with Patty Griffin), to succumbing to the wiles of a voodoo sorceress ("Tarantula," a salsa scorcher that's been a longtime staple of his Scabs band). The sound is as tasty as that of a Steely Dan record and often as subtly eclectic, suffused with surrealistic images ("you're the color of a sideways look from an undercover cop in a comic book"). Schneider will be accompanied by his full Lonelyland band. 18+. (Photo by Brad Bond)
