Art Attack

If northeast Minneapolis is home to the city's reigning arts community, then the Northrup King Building is its presiding behemoth, a former seed company headquarters that now houses artist workspaces. This weekend's Art Attack—an energetic art crawl with an aggressive name—gives access to the private studios of over 200 of the building's four floors of occupants. It's a chance to see not only the product but also the environs of its process. Among them are the studios of Roxanne Jackson, whose ceramic animal-human hybrids were recently exhibited at the Minneapolis Institute of Arts; the letterpresses of Angel Bomb Design; and the four large looms that create Kelly Marshall's hand-woven textiles. Outside, jewelry designer Heinz Brummel's Mongolian yurts are on display, and the Magic Bus Cafe, a 1978 Chevy school bus with a purple paint job, makes its last outing for the season. If the standard open studio offering of pretzels doesn't cut it, the cafe offers a variety of split and fried sausages with toppings like curry relish and garlic-beet sauerkraut.
