The Day of the Dead: the Final Show

Well, this is it -- after more than 70 years, a Minneapolis institution is closing its doors. It's a temporary situation at best; the Uptown Bar & Café is currently in the process of searching for a new location, a situation stemming from owner Frank Toonen's need to build a financial nest egg for his family and the widow of his son and former owner Kenneth Toonen. Held, ironically enough, on the Day of the Dead, this final show at the old haunt of the Replacements and the Jayhawks isn't light on local luminaries: headliners the Twilight Hours (pictured), the duo of Trip Shakespeare alumni John Munson and Matt Wilson, have reemerged after years apart as one of the Cities' premiere purveyors of rootsy, bucolic indie pop, with the September release Stereo Night acting as their elegaic mission statement. Cutting-edge bizarro-jazz wonders Happy Apple and demented comedy perpetrators The Hawaii Show share the bill, making this final goodbye to the Uptown one of the most eclectic and unpredictable shows in recent memory; when it's over, they might not even need a wrecking ball to knock down the foundations these bands are sure to shake to the ground.
