There's never been a better time to check out the Twin Cities slam poetry scene. The St. Paul Soap Boxing team captured the national championship this year, and a pair of local poets made strong finishes in the Individual World Poetry Slam this month (Sierra DeMulder arriving at ninth place, 6 is 9 taking fourth). And the news is out that next summer's championship will be held right here in the Twin Cities, so our local poets will have the chance to defend their titles on their home turf. As the new season ramps up, slammers will be bringing new material to the table, as well as perfecting their delivery of popular older poems. There's no doubt now that the Twin Cities is home to one of the strongest scenes in the U.S., drawing visiting poets from around the country, like this month's Soap Boxing feature performer, Laura Yes Yes, a nationally acclaimed poet with a political bent and a healthy sense of humor (one of her poems, "Change," advocates racial equality through an increase in interracial intercourse).
