India's foremost exponent of Bharatanatyam, a divinely inspired dance form that requires demonic precision, Alarmel Valli transforms superb technique into poetry. She blurs the boundaries between tradition and invention by bringing contemporary resonance to this classic Indian solo form. Valli was the teacher of our own Ranee and Aparna Ramaswamy of Ragamala Dance. Here's a chance to see the source from which these superb performers have sprung. One besotted Parisian critic writes, "A transfigured body takes shape—her arms become multiple, her flesh musical, her hands fluid like the wings of a butterfly, her feet agile and sonorous." She'll be dancing to the sonorous music of her own orchestra.
