Lynne Nottage's latest play grabbed a greedy passel of awards in 2009 (Pulitzer, Obie, Drama Desk), so it arrives still smoking at Mixed Blood. Ruined tells the story of Mama Nadi, an opportunistic African businesswoman who runs a makeshift rainforest oasis. She serves miners, government militias, and the rebels who oppose them, all the while protecting and exploiting the women under her charge. It's probably best not to arrive looking for any easy moral formulations, though one might expect the mixed insight that humans find endless ways in which to take advantage of one another. Perhaps it's only the circumstances, and the prospect of the next bitter deal, that change.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 7:30 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: Oct. 16. Continues through Nov. 1, 2009
