Big Love

University of Minnesota theater students invest playwright Charles Mees's take on Aeschylus's drama The Suppliant Women with extreme physicality and radical gender politics. Mees has described his work as bringing in "material from history, philosophy, insanity, inattention, distractedness, judicial theory, sudden violent passion, lyricism, the National Enquirer, nostalgia, longing, aspiration, literary criticism, anguish, confusion, inability." He publishes his texts online and allows anyone to use them. Director Lisa Channer employs everything from acrobatic aggression to meditative tai chi in this tale of revenge wherein 50 brides are forced to marry 50 grooms. Inspired by the potent drama and mordant wit of the late dance theater pioneer Pina Bausch, this eccentric collage promises an in-your-face tribute to theatrical traditions both ancient and modern.
