Arnold Newman Lecture Series: Paul Graham

Any fans of documentary photography—candid photos that represent moments of raw truth—should look into the work of Paul Graham. The British-born, New York-based artist has produced 12 books of photos that cover a surprisingly large swath of the global population. For his mid-'80s tome Beyond Caring, Graham photographed depressed, desperate people in Britain's drab unemployment offices. The choice to take color photos only highlights the melancholy view of Thatcher's England. As one of the leading photographers capable of creating a new movement in his art (other British photographers began using color more after Graham became popular), Graham will speak Thursday about the status of photography in the modern world and what issues he and other photographers are facing.
