Minneapolis's annual showcase of films about music launches this month with 20 movies screening at theaters around town. This week, the festival premieres with R.E.M.: This Is Not a Show (Cedar Cultural Center, Tuesday at 7:30 p.m.), a documentary that recorded the band's rehearsals of brand-new material at the Olympia Theatre in Dublin before enthusiastic capacity crowds. A sample of other films next week: P-Star Rising (Trylon Microcinema, Saturday, October 4, at 5 p.m.) is a feature doc about a single father and his two daughters living in a Harlem shelter. When the father discovers his precocious nine-year-old daughter's remarkable talent for rap, he hitches the family's future to his plans on making her a star, walking a fine line between granting his daughter's dreams and exploiting her talent; Bound for Glory (Trylon, Thursday, October 1, at 7 p.m.) is a classic biopic from Hal Ashby on the life of folk singer Woody Guthrie (played by the late David Carradine); and the documentary Dig! (Oak Street Cinema, Saturday, October 3, at 9:30 p.m.), which won a Grand Jury Prize at Sundance in 2004 for its portrayal of two rock 'n' roll front men who are both friends and bitter rivals, engaging in a remarkable psychological gamesmanship and more-colorful-than-fiction lifestyles.
