Women's Flat-Track Derby Association (WFTDA) North Central Division Championship

You've probably noticed that roller derby has been snowballing into something bigger and bigger over the past couple of years. For example, Minnesota has not one but two leagues (Minnesota RollerGirls and North Star Roller Girls). Both leagues have been showing up at festivals and other events throughout the summer to intimidate and impress crowds. Even Hollywood is getting into roller derby; this year the sport will be given the coming-of-age treatment in the Drew Barrymore-directed Whip It. What's even more notable? St. Paul will be hosting the Women's Flat-Track Derby Association's North Central Division Championship, which leads winners on the road to nationals. To narrow down competitors, 40 teams will compete in four regional tournaments. The North Central Division, dubbed "Brawl of America," features both Minnesota teams, as well as the Windy City Rollers, Brewcity Bruisers, Grand Raggidy Roller Girls, Detroit Derby Girls, and others. Each night there will be parties around town where you can drink with your favorite players. The top three teams to emerge from this championship will go on to compete nationally in Philadelphia in November. For more info visit www.brawlofamerica.com. (photo by Jon Kontio)
