Hi Kids! A Retrospective of Twin Cities Children's Television Shows

Long before Barney and Friends, Teletubbies, or The Electric Company, children's television was ruled by shows like Romper Room, and by people like Daryl Laub, local creator of several long-running kiddie TV characters. If you remember who that is, or if you know what the hell Romper Room was, it would be a good idea for you to check out the Heights Theatre's retrospective Hi Kids!, a night of rare footage from the glory days of Twin Cities children's television when locally produced shows still dominated the afternoon airwaves rather than the syndicated stuff kids today tune in to. The shows, some unaired since their original showing in the 1950s and '60s, will highlight a time when kids throughout the upper Midwest were glued to their sets watching Laub's J.P. Patches, and Grandpa Ken on channel nine. In addition to the forgotten footage, stars of the shows, including Miss Betty of Romper Room, Laub, and Mary Davies of Axel and His Dog and Carmen's Cottage, will be making appearances at this unique event.
