American Pottery Festival

Admit it: There have been countless times when you've driven down Franklin Avenue and thought, "I really want to check out that Northern Clay Center." Or perhaps you're already a regular, lured by the mystique of the life of the mud-thrower and charmed by the way that ceramics toe the line between the practicality of craft and the beauty of art. For those of you who have put off a visit, wait no longer. The American Pottery Festival is the prime time to plunge into the rich, vibrant Minneapolis clay scene. Attracting potters from all over the upper Midwest and the country (including local ceramics heavyweight Warren MacKenzie, New Yorker Matthew Metz, and Canadian Walter Ostrom), the three-day event offers slide talks, demonstrations, and lectures. Go ahead, take the leap. Get a jump on your Christmas shopping, or just allow yourself to be enamored by the "studio in the woods" romance of a potter at work, or awed by the countless ways in which space can be contained. Visit www.northernclaycenter.org for a complete schedule.
Fri., Sept. 11, 8:30 a.m.-9 p.m.; Sat., Sept. 12, 9 a.m.-4 p.m.; Sun., Sept. 13, 9:30 a.m.-2 p.m., 2009
