Junkyard Empire

When the RNC barrelled through St. Paul last August, there were millions of witnesses to the disorder -- and five them happened to belong to the capital city's foremost agit-prop funk-rap-fusion band. Junkyard Empire were one of the highest-profile local bands in the wake of that chaotic week, playing protest shows during the event and benefit shows for the RNC 8 legal fund afterwards, and they've since parlayed that visibility and activism into tour gigs sharing stages with the likes of Dead Prez and the Coup. Naturally, the EP-release show for their new Rebellion Politik EP is going to get people moving -- there'll be more than enough power in Junkyard Empire's heavy-chops live-band sound to get that happening. But it'll also edify them, as it'll be supplemented by a presentation by journalist Dahr Jamail, whose book The Will to Resist: Soldiers Who Refuse to Fight in Iraq and Afghanistan takes an embedded look at on-the-ground opposition to American military operations in the Middle East. Also appearing will be Carnage and El Guante.
