B-Girl Be: Mama Said Knock U Out!

After three globe-shaking festivals and a brief hiatus, B-Girl Be is back, starting with this exhibit of video, painting, and other media by 28 artists from around the world. B-Girl Be's annual celebration of women in hip hop always brings great work to Minneapolis, and this year is no exception: Bronx-born street photographer Lauri Lyons will be world-premiering a sound and mixed-media installation that draws on Egyptology, rap, and hair weaves. The MCAD alum has shot on four continents for everyone from The Source to Fortune, and was the first African American woman signed to Getty Images. (Her books include last year's Flag International, which allowed Europeans of various backgrounds to pose with the American flag and talk about the U.S.A.) Though B-Girl Be culminates with the B-Girl Be Block Party on September 19, the exhibit continues through October 23. The opening-night reception is Friday, August 28, 2009 from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. (stencil piece by NIZ)
