The Breaks

Kung fu, hip hop, and breakdancing might seem like an unlikely combination, but once you experience this threesome you'll understand that it's as tasty as peanut butter, banana, and honey. Friday night's party, dubbed the Breaks, gives you the opportunity to do just that. Step inside the hip-hop lounge, where turntablists Smyrx and Morplay will be spinning tunes both old school (James Brown, Charles Wright) and current (MF Doom, Black Star). Breakdancers will take to the floor to show off their moves. And then there's kung fu. Classics from the beloved genre will be screening throughout the night, including Mystery of Chessboxing, a flick from the late '70s about a boy who avenges the death of his father at the hands of Ghost Face Killer by learning mad kung fu skills, and the cult classic The Last Dragon. The press release states that this shindig is going for a low-key vibe, like one of those awesome summertime parties that lingers on in one's memory years later in a pleasant haze.
Fri., July 31, 9 p.m.; Fridays, 9 p.m., 2009
