2009 Fresh Ink Series

Illusion Theater's 2009 Fresh Ink series of new works continues this week with Jenna Zark's A Great Miracle Happened Here. The taut character study depicts a Midwestern couple whose suppositions about things are upended when their 18-year-old son decides to join the Israeli army; they're torn between supporting him and worrying feverishly for his safety in the Middle East. Next week rounds out the festival with Toni Morrison's Jazz, adapted by Marion McClinton with a score by Sanford Moore. Morrison's story of obsessive love takes place in 1926, when a middle-aged man shoots his teenaged lover and his wife assaults the corpse at the funeral. Both shows promise to be heavy, intense, and inventive. (pictured: Jenna Zark)
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 7 p.m. Starts: July 9. Continues through July 26, 2009
