During the mid-1800s, Mendota was a hopping territory. Located where the Mississippi and Minnesota Rivers meet, the city was a common pit stop for French fur traders traveling from Canada to Louisiana. Jean Baptiste is the patron saint of Quebec, and his saints' day is widely celebrated through French Canada. It will also be observed here in Minnesota at the Sibley house. Take a guided tour earlier in the day, or bring a blanket and sit on the lawn where local folk musicians will perform a free concert. Costumed characters will wander about, and the evening will be capped with a bonfire.
