Grand Old Day 2009

Grand Old Day is the largest one-day festival in the Midwest. For many Minnesotans it also marks the start of the big summer street festivals, even though we still have a few weeks before the season changes. The theme this year is "It's Grand Being Green," so festival-goers are encouraged to ride bikes, walk, or bus to the celebration (go to the website for a free bus pass). Show up early to enjoy the parades (the big one is at 10 a.m.) and joggers, or arrive later when the sun is high in the sky and the neighbors are on their porches with beer. Walk along Grand Avenue and you will find street performers, fair-style food vendors, art shows, kids' activities, and sports. Not that interested in being mobile? Plan your ride home and spend the afternoon hanging out in one of the eight beer gardens. Musical acts include Gospel Gossip and First Communion After Party at D'Amico & Sons, Heiruspecs and M.anifest at Salut Bar Americain, and Solid Gold, Private Dancer, and Eyedea & Abilities at Dixie's on Grand, among many others. Don't plan on lingering, though: Everyone knows that Sundays in Minnesota are a buzz-kill, and this party really does end at the stroke of five.
