What happens when a museum becomes a biosphere, when rather than being individual sculptures and paintings, the art within a space interweaves with itself, forcing the guest to experience an artist's world in its entirety? This is the world created by internationally known artist Tomás Saraceno. His work around the Walker can be found in a surprising variety of locations, from the hallways, to the gallery rooms, outdoors, and winding through staircases. "Lighter than Air" will feature a variety of Saraceno's work from 2003 to the present, including photography, sculptures, and installations. Though his creations are varied, ecosystems, balance, and architecture always play an important role. In his drawing Air-Port-City he presents a futuristic cityscape floating above Earth. With his living sculpture 32SW Stay Green/Flying Garden/Air-Port-City he creates a sustainable, orb-shaped greenhouse from grass, electrical cables, solar panels, and a water supply system. And then there was last year's Museo aero solar, a solar-powered balloon created by old plastic bags. Saraceno has stated that his ultimate goal is to "build the world's largest flying museum." Why not? After all, the sky's the limit. At this week's Free Thursday Night, stop in from 6 p.m. to 9 p.m. to create a solar-powered geodesic dome lamp from recycled materials.
