When the audience files into the theater to witness Story of a Rabbit, it faces a bizarre juxtaposition: death and hospitality. The show's creator and star, Hugh Hughes (the alter ego of Welshman Shôn Dale-Jones), shakes everybody's hand as they walk in, frequently offering audiences a spot of tea, and as they settle into their seats they see the word "Death" projected nakedly on the wall behind the stage. As the gregarious Hughes begins the performance, he gives an explanation of what his purpose will be: to talk about how we know nothing about death. With a spare set and a few very simple props, Hughes, with his pal Alred providing a live soundtrack on various instruments, bounds between humorous monologues and moving discussions about the end of life and our ignorance on the subject. This theatrical tandem of comedy and gravitas makes Rabbit a bit like a standup comedian's rendition of Randy Pausch's The Last Lecture, but it works better than you could possibly imagine. Hughes brilliantly guides audiences through his experiences with mortality, which will inevitably make them think about their own—and perhaps laugh a little about it, too.
Thursdays-Saturdays, 8 p.m. Starts: May 28. Continues through May 30, 2009
