Demetri Martin is probably most widely recognized for his work on The Daily Show with Jon Stewart and, subsequently, his own sketch comedy show, Important Things with Demetri Martin. He's quite adept at working in those formats, but his standup is different from what he does on either of those programs. Onstage he reminds one of Steven Wright, following deadpan setups with often-absurd punch lines. "If I owned a bookstore," he tells an audience, "I'd make the mystery section hard to find." He's also been known to break out a large drawing pad or pick up a guitar to season his one-liners. Though he looks like he just rolled out of the student union at any given university, Martin is actually 36. The former law student dropped out of college just a year shy of his degree after deciding that he wanted to pursue a career in comedy. With a successful run of CDs, movies, and TV gigs, it seems his instincts were right.
