Some celebrate Memorial Day by sleeping in and enjoying the family. Others take the time to remember loved ones who have died in combat. And others reflect on patriotism and American history. This Monday you can do all of these things at the Memorial Day celebration at Lakewood Cemetery. The event begins with a ceremony at 10:30 a.m. featuring live music, military speakers, color guard by the Minnesota National Guard, and a dove release. Around noon other events begin with family arts and crafts and refreshments throughout the day. There will be guided and self-guided tours as well. The guided walking tour covers the history behind people who shaped the city, including the Pillsbury, Lowry, and Loring families. The trolley tours will explore the monuments of local politicians, musicians, artists, and businessmen. Those interested in scenic views should take a horse-and-carriage or streetcar ride throughout the grounds and from Lake Harriet to Lakewood. Most events are free, though some tours cost a mere $2.
