Raskol

My first reading of Crime and Punishment dovetailed with the election-night triumph of the first President Bush (I'm dating myself, but we're all friends here), and the combined intensity of the two events led to a marvelous, crushing episode of existential despair. But don't be blue, live and learn, and put it to a beat. Or so Ten Thousand Things might suggest, tackling the plight of Raskolnikov in a new adaptation by Kira Obolensky of Dostoevsky's tightrope story of murder, guilt, and redemption. Peter Vitale provides an all-new score and performs as part of a free-jazz trio. Is it a musical? A play with music? A freeform exploration of human desire and regret? In any case, the cast is stellar, the company is always great, and the experience is original. This one would be a shame to miss. (photo by Peter Vitale)
