Crystal Antlers weave an encapsulating mesh of dynamic noise: psych, blues, prog, soul. Weeping organs collide with guitar lines that sound like Jimi Hendrix hooked on arpeggios, and Jonny Bell adds vocals that are less lyric-focused and more like a vessel to embellish the sonic doom and gloom. The six-piece sound way too angsty to hail from sunny California. Their music is much more appropriate for sub-zero climates. Songs like "A Thousand Eyes" lift you to the icy top of the mountain, then drop you parachute-less into arctic oblivion. The bad-acid-trip squalls of "Parting Song for the Torn Sky" sound like noise rock with a purpose, begging you to look into that warped mirror. Yes, your face is really melting.
