Café Scientifique: Honeybees & Human Health

Bees are perhaps the greatest botanists of the animal world. Not only do they pollinate the flowers as they bloom in the spring, but they also help sustain and propagate our crops. Some beekeepers rent out bees to farmers of apples and blueberries, for example. When bees die en masse due to extreme weather or frostbite, crop yields may suffer as well. So how do we keep bees healthy? U of M entomologist Marla Spivak will discuss the many good things that bees do for us, as well as how to preserve this important insect. Bees have even recently made the news; not only does their sweet honey soothe sore throats, but recent studies suggest that propolis, a plant-derived resin bees deposit in their hive, could be a key in advancing toward an HIV cure.
