Los Campesinos!

Barely six months after releasing their full-length debut, Hold On Now, Youngster, this giddily depressed septet of Welsh pseudo siblings last November released their second, We Are Beautiful, We Are Doomed (Arts & Crafts). Like its predecessor, it's an adrenal indie punk-pop rush of frenetic guitars, breakneck glockenspiel, dizzy violin, and careening percussion amid energetically whiny, briskly spewed lyrics from Gareth Campensinos! and Aleksandra Campesinos! And what are Los Campesinos! so fired up about? Misery, vomiting, disinterested lovers, black holes, military conscription, and "graffitied genitalia," all delivered in a witty context of flying metaphors, impudent absurdities, and whiplash jokes as dependent on careful phrasing as sledgehammer punch lines ("I died on a cross....trainer, getting in shape for you"). Pretensions like overzealous punctuation and foreign language episodes might overwhelm most bands, but Los Campesinos! transform grating into ingratiating with their zany blitz and unbridled cleverness. With Sky Larkin. 18+.
