In choreographer Donna Uchizono's "Thin Air," as critic Deborah Jowitt puts it, "...the virtual and the real party together." Uchizono knows how to make dances that boggle the senses and simmer with mystery, that are simultaneously contemporary and timeless, and intensely personal yet mythic in their power and scope. Here she draws on modern physics and the Buddhist tenet of emptiness to create an Uchizonian universe of jiggling heads, melting faces, and dancing both juicy and meticulous. Composer/guitarist Fred Firth's art-rock score and Michael Casselli's ghostly video images mix with Uchizono's distinctive movement to create an animated art installation that becomes a mind game: Are these imaginary toads in real gardens we see, or real toads hopping about in virtual shrubs?
