Over the past few decades the U.S. has had an obsession with abs. Blame it on Janet Jackson in the late '90s, the simultaneous trend of low-cut jeans paired with the baby-tee, or even informercials on a continual loop for Pilates and core workouts, but we just don't freak out over legs, shoulders, and other regions like we used to. Perhaps that is why Bellydance Superstars has had such an intense performance schedule these past couple of years. In 2003, after touring with Lollapalooza, they continued on to headline their own tour, performing an insane 56 shows in 55 cities in 62 days. Over the years the group has strived to maintain a balance between authenticity and modernity without becoming too garish or Vegas-y. Though they have asides into other types of dance, including Polynesian (which is surprisingly similar to belly dance), the music remains focused on the drum chorus, and moves remain a sensual response to the rhythmic sounds.
