Momentum: New Comics

Founded in 1976, Fantagraphics Books has been a major proponent of the legitimacy of comic art and the graphic novel. In 2005, Fantagraphics published the debut issue of Mome, a quarterly anthology wherein stories are told in the comic medium, but the publication itself has the aesthetic of a literary journal. This Friday marks the opening of a retrospective on the art featured in the innovative publication, which includes work by up-and-coming artists like Sophie Crumb, Tim Hensley, R. Kikuo Johnson, Tom Kaczynski, Zak Sally, and Dash Shaw. The opening reception will feature hip-hop performances by duo Elliot Looney and DJ Danny Sigelman, as well as a chat with Mome editor Eric Reynolds. Tom Kaczynski and Zak Sally will lead a gallery talk at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, April 9. Opening reception 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Friday, March 6.
