Winter in Bloom

It's not pretty outside right now. Trees are bare and trembling in the wind. Grass is brown and matted under piles of snow, slush, and ice. Cars look dusty, covered with a layer of winter soot. But don't fret. To get you revved up for spring—which is only a couple of weeks away—the Minneapolis Institute of Arts is hosting Winter in Bloom, a sneak-peek at their popular spring celebration, Art in Bloom. The highlight of the spring event is seeing favorite pieces from the museum rendered florally, so Thursday's event starts off with a docent-led tour of works to be floralized this year, as well as those that have been in the past. Soni Forsman, who bears the impressive title of "Queen of the Water Lilies," will give tips on water gardening, from humble container gardens to full-out ponds. Finally, while having a bust made of flowers probably isn't something you're interested in creating yourself, Art in Bloom People's Choice Award winners Kristie Harrison and Mickey O'Kane will demonstrate how they created their impressive floral sculptures and will give us wishful green-thumbers some practical tips. Reservations are required, call 612.870.3045.
