Merlove

If there is one thing that moviegoers remember from 2004's Sideways it's the catchphrase: "I am not drinking any fucking merlot." But why not? And what has happened to merlot in the years following the Oscar-winning movie's release? This is the question posited in Rudolph McClain's Merlove, a documentary (with moments of animation) celebrating the shunned wine. Through a series of interviews, McClain explores the culture surrounding wine, from poking fun at wine snobs who actually know very little about wine, to introducing viewers to some guy who recollects a particularly foul-smelling wine he once had and to experts who argue that it is the individual wine that is either bad or good, not entire varieties. Thursday night, the Ritz celebrates wine with a screening of the flick. Those in attendance can sample a variety of merlots, or, if you're still wary, you can try some pinot noir by Twin Cities label Sacre Bleu. Following the film, director Rudolph McClain will be on hand for a Q&A. 21+.
