What happens when you cross Manet's velvety, richly colored portraiture with Warhol's passion for pop culture? The resulting lovechild may very well be the work of photographer and painter Elizabeth Peyton. Her portrait subjects span centuries: Earlier works include historical figures such as Napoleon, Marie Antoinette, and Ludwig of Bavaria, while mid-career pieces romanticize budding icons like Kurt Cobain, Oasis's Gallagher brothers, and Leonardo DiCaprio. Later works focus on friends and acquaintances (mostly established artists, designers, and filmmakers). It is clear that Peyton loves her subject matter as much as she adores deep colors, setting, and context.
