Hedwig and the Angry Inch

So a German boy named Hansel falls in love with an American G.I. The boy then becomes a she, travels from East Berlin to the U.S., and later goes on tour with her rock band to places like Bumfuck, Nowhere (a.k.a. the Bilgewater Inn Seafood Restaurant). In between the angst of things never quite working out for Hedwig, there are spectacularly manic, glittery, flashy musical numbers. It's the sort of movie that can only be birthed from a one-man underground show in New York City. But trust me, this movie really exists. Tonight, you can enjoy all the lavishly bright, depressingly dark, and utterly confusing emotions with a screening of Hedwig and the Angry Inch. The 7 p.m. screening is no-frills and serves as an excellent warm-up to the world of director-star-writer John Cameron Mitchell. The 9 p.m. show will feature a live running commentary by the man himself.
Thu., Feb. 5, 7 & 9 p.m., 2009
