John Pizzarelli

Besides being a notable jazz guitarist with a subtle, swinging style clearly influenced by his father Bucky, John Pizzarelli has established himself as a sophisticated singer and a leading proponent of the great American songbook. His latest album, With a Song in My Heart (Telarc), is a fine tribute to composer Richard Rodgers, ranging from introspective ballads like "I Have Dreamed" to up-tempo show tunes like "The Lady Is a Tramp," here given a nice kick from a chortling horn section that periodically collaborates with Pizzarelli's regular trio throughout the disc. As a vocalist, Pizzarelli favors smooth understatement, coaxing out the richness of the lyrics with caresses and sly insinuations. But he can also be a dynamic scat demon, which he demonstrates by matching his own lightning guitar licks on "I Like to Recognize the Tune," and in even livelier fashion on "Mountain Greenery." $40 at 7 p.m.; $25 at 9:30 p.m
Mondays, Sundays. Starts: Jan. 25. Continues through Jan. 26, 2009
