Minnesota Swarm vs. the San Jose Stealth

It's been a rough year for professional sports outside of the major four. The quirky and popular Arena Football League canceled its 2009 season, and the National Lacrosse League announced that its Chicago franchise, the Shamrox, folded. Economic recession spares none, including offbeat pro sports. But the NLL is determined to keep going, and the Minnesota Swarm have a lot to look forward to in the coming 16-game season, after a successful 2008 effort. The Swarm took a huge step last season to turn themselves into a serious power in the NLL. They finished tied for first in the NLL's East Division with a 10-6 record and earned a playoff berth. They were bounced in their first postseason game, but their regular season game play was admirable considering they lacked a big-name scorer. The Swarm take on the San Jose Stealth in their home opener at the Xcel. The Stealth tied for the best record (9-7) in the West Division last season. $13-$65. (photo by Bruce Kluckhohn)
