Snowshoeing

As anyone who has ever had to trudge through the snow to the bus stop recalls, deep snow can be a chore to run through. It works a completely different set of muscles than walking does, and if you do it for too long the chill will settle into your bones, from the toes to the shins. Miraculously, there is a way around sinking your feet completely into the snow. In fact, it's a shoe that was most likely invented by an ancestor some 4,000 to 6,000 years ago. No, this product wasn't an Uggs precursor. I'm talking about snowshoes, the netted shoes that allow the user to almost float above the snow surface, making for faster travel, easier and prolonged access to nature, and a drier walk. Never tried it? You can this Saturday at Theodore Wirth Park. Pick up a pair at the Wirth Beach parking lot on Glenwood Avenue and enjoy a nature tromp through the snow. Many fail to enjoy the parks and nature areas of Minneapolis during the winter months, so if you're game for a little chilly weather, this is a great opportunity to enjoy the winter wildlife. $10. 10 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. 1339 Theodore Wirth Pkwy., Minneapolis; 612.313.7725.
Sat., Dec. 27, 10 a.m.-11:30 p.m., 2008
