Remember when Eminem dissed Moby with the line "nobody listens to techno"? (While we're at it -- remember Eminem?) Not the most reverent claim to make when you're coming out of Detroit, the city that birthed the sound, but a quick run through the ranks of top 40 radio anytime in the last few years reveals that Slim Shady wasn't exactly accurate anyways. With techno-savvy, club-brewed sounds dominating the charts in the latter half of the decade, it only makes sense to pay homage to one of the men who paved the way, which makes Derrick May's appearance at the Loft's intermittently-resurrected Shelter night absolutely essential. In the mid-late '80s, May concocted some of the most revolutionary music out of Motor City since Berry Gordy opened his charm school, solidifying dance music's post-disco futurism with digital-minded classics like "Nude Photo" and "Strings of Life". His set will be preceded by a screening of "High Tech Soul", a documentary on the creation and rise of the Detroit techno scene. In the Loft. 18+
