Ice Skating at the Depot

Sure, there are tons of places to get your skate on in Minnesota, but those who know their outside edges from their inside know that the Depot is the caviar of the Minnesota skating rinks. Actually, as a rink, it ranks pretty high up nationally as well; USA Today and MSNBC have both included the Depot on top 10 lists for the best places to skate in the country. Even more impressive? Olympic gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi, a skater who can land a triple lutz with the flick of an ankle, has cited the Depot as one of her favorite rinks to skate. Once a train shed, the space features floor-to-ceiling glass walls that showcase the lovely Minneapolis skyline. The skating surface is well-maintained, of course, so you shouldn't snag your toe pick on irregular ice when you try a fancy spin (or just a general glide if you're new to the ways of the ice). The rink has open skate on most days this December, and those looking for an unusual New Year's Eve activity should consider celebrating 2009 on ice, not the rocks. $8. Most open skate times start at 10 a.m. and run into the evening. Check www.thedepotminneapolis.com/icerink for a complete schedule.
