Fat Man Crying

Joseph Scrimshaw describes Fat Man Crying as "neither dark and cynical nor saccharine sweet." That's about the best way to take on the holidays: avoiding the icebergs of reflexive gloom while acknowledging that it's not necessarily, you know, the most wonderful time of the year. Scrimshaw's show, which is intelligent and funny, features a morbidly depressed Santa Claus breaking into the home of a married couple on Christmas Eve. From here, we move on to matters of belief, truth, and generally muddling through the complexities of life. This is an intriguing take on holiday shows, because it holds a mirror up to the rest of the year and all the compromises and accommodations that life requires when the mistletoe is not hanging. And did I mention that it's very funny?
Fridays, Saturdays, 8 p.m.; Sundays, 2 p.m. Starts: Dec. 19. Continues through Dec. 28, 2008
