Winter One-Nighters: A Not Too Distant Past

Though our minds often jump instantly to New York, Chicago is truly our big sister city to the east. The third-biggest city in the U.S., Chicago racks up cultural and historical points for its prohibition tomfoolery, for being a jazz hot spot, and for labor protests, among many, many other accomplishments, making our claims to Prince and progressive politics seem paltry. This Friday at “A Not Too Distant Past,” you can check out a variety of video segments from historical documentaries on Chicago’s activism throughout the years, including pivotal moments like the Haymarket Affair, a rally for striking workers that turned deadly, to guerilla television (similar to guerilla radio broadcasts in the ’60s and ‘70s), and subversive video art that speaks to current issues.
Fri., Dec. 5, 7 p.m., 2008
