In December of 2005, I stood backstage at the Varsity with a dozen happily bewildered local rappers who, in a heartwarming display of honest-to-god modesty, could not believe the sold-out crowd that had shown up for their Doomtree "Blowout" show. POS, Sims, Paper Tiger, Mictlan, Dessa, Turbo Nemesis, Lazerbeak, and friends have since thrown their Blowout show every year, and every year it proves to be a fantastic night for local hip-hop fans. "We threw the first one because we'd never thrown a show that had only Doomtree on the bill," says Stef Leron, a.k.a. POS, (whose new album comes out in February). "We had no idea what our draw was, so we wanted to test it out. Everyone was so happy that night, and the Blowout has since been a celebration—it's the only time of the year that we're all like, 'YEAAAAH!!!'" Get an electric dose of the Twin Cities' most likable hip-hop crew at First Avenue tonight, and don't forget to check out their new and very first DVD on sale at the venue. The only predictable part of the night will come when Doomtree will act—and be—just as surprised at all the local love as they were that first time. 18+.
