Generalization is never a good thing. In every society there are good and bad apples. One should not generalize and put a whole group of people in one catagory...

One less stink rag in the world. Some people say that Somalians take all the jobs, dead wrong. Somalians are a parisite to society that clench their buck teeth onto the welfare system and don't let go

The violence that Somalis face in Minneapolis should show them what we African-Americans faced and are still facing living in America. Also, it should tell them how the Caucasians really feel about them, because the majority of Africans really think that white people love them, and they look down on African-Americans and not regarding us as a part of them due to the lies that white people have told them about us. What Somalis and Africans in general do not realize is that; white people talk about them to us, saying that Africans swing from trees like monkeys, they run around in the jungle half-nude with bones in their noses, even drawing cartoons depicting them as such. As a matter of fact, white people go to every race telling lies about the other just to keep us divided, hating and despising one another!

These punks are doing the city of Minneapolis of great act of community service by killing each other! They have no business living here in the United States anyway. They are nothing but scum who attempt to corrupt and pollute the places that give them refuge. I say that they all should be forcefully mass deported back to their slimy, decrepid, delapitated, impoverished, lawless, invalid excuse for a country and rot in the dry sands of hell!!

Don't blame anybody please, so called no child or Anybody else!! This is the culture of where we are "Gangs, drugs and killings are the norms of high school drop outs", results of cause of the welfare and downgrading society. Somali teachers are there at schools doing nothing, it's waste of tax payers money. no need them , they are part of the problem.

Whenever I hear about one of these senseless killings, I feel sad, gloomy and powerless. But people here are very quick to blame Somali culture, tribalism, culture shock, No Child Left Behind, etc. I havent heard anyone addressing the central reason why Somalis are very reluctant to talk to the police. The fear and mistrust they have about the authorities is based on not only experiences back home where police had absolute power to do whatever they want, but also how American culture admires police officers who protect certain communities and oppress others while enjoying full support of those who are entitled their services. This is classic American way of life and anyone who is willing to look into it open mindedly, will easily reach same conclusion. Also, I know from my own personal experience that when Minneapolis Police Officers say they cant solve these cases because of lack of corporation from the Somali community, they are just trying to justify and legitimize something that everybody knows, depending on what community you belong to- those who deserve to be served exceptionally or those who are oppressed, harassed, alienated, and then blamed.
I hope this CHANGE Clichill change minds of those who are entitled the full services of the criminal justice system in Minneapolis and all over the land.

Blame it all on no child left behind? What a stupid article. Now that Bush isnt president will the messiah ever be called to account for his failing? Or is dear leader infalliable.I don't like Bush or Obama but come on. Anyway, I think gangster rap music, bet, MTV, and degenerate youth culture could shoulder their share of the blame. I'm sure these kids have been pumping their heads full of it. When do they ever have to take responsibilty?

U Employee 11/22/2008 9:18:00 AM
I work on the West Bank of the U of M. I know many, many, people in this culture that are outstanding students and individuals. I would think that they would serve as role models for others. It's not fair to generalize all. At the same point though, I also know some that frequent that side of the campus who who may not be students and who induce some sense of fear. They harass students, staff, and have in the past caused violence. That doesn't make me think that the culture on a whole is any less valuable than any other here. I think there are younger generation Somali youths that need leadership, guidance, and some plain discipline. When it boils down to it, every culture, every population as a whole is responsible for raising their youth. I hope that this one is able to build a strong network that includes families, friends, and their community. No one wants violence or gang activity here in the city. Violence rolls over to all neighborhoods and effects everyone. Lets ALL of us focus on raising our youth in peace, not in vindication or ignorance.

Clearly this article has hit a soft and sensitive spot for many people - rarely do City Pages articles make such waves. I do have to say, however, that this article is written in such a fragmented style that it lacks any clear, concise point. Do we blame the Brian Coyle Center, No Child Left Behind, low income housing, gun laws, the Somali Culture, Mpls Police...the list is endless. Any murder is pointless, no matter the address, the skin color of the victim, or the language they spoke. What I find absurd is the ethnocentrism us "Americans" (people born in the US) exute on a daily basis. People's comments about how Somali women are treated is completely irrelevant to the context of the article; ethnocentrism. Comments about removing the Boyle Center because it's a hub for violenec; ethnocentrism. The cops saying Somali eye witnesses need to start talking to police; ethnocentrism. How about learning to understand a culture that came to the US and Minnesota seeking political refuge. Many of the immigrants are highly educated, had great jobs, lived in supportive communties. They came here expecting a better life after civil war erupted in their country. But when they came they met intolerance, racism, and a work force that wouldn't acknowledge their past experiences. Somalians chose Minnesota for a reason, and I can tell you it wasn't because of the weather.

It's time the new Americans quit taking advantage of the US and carrying their own weight. The Mexicans and Somali's bring their gruesome violence with them, frequently harming innocent and legal US citizens in their way, but they surely have no problem reaching out for the welfare checks and subsidized housing. Obviously neither group is capable of producing enough strong and positive leaders in their respective communities, so I say NO MORE allowed to enter and NO MORE allowed to stay if they can't follow the laws or learn the language.

As an employee at the Brian Coyle Center, it saddens me to read such ignorant comments that have been posted by persons that have NO clue as to what the Center provides to soooo many families, and children. I really wish the writer of this article had taken the time to point out the positive things that take place here as well. We operate in a neighborhood that is home to many Somalis, that need assistance. Wether a client is taking ESL (English Second Language)classes, picking up food from our stocked Food Shelf, receiving help with homework, participating in Employment Services, receiving legal assistance, learning computer skills, OR simply shooting hoops...our clients are grateful. Do you really think that if the Center was gone, this kind of violence would end? I personally think it would increase. Is it really worth losing all of the positive things this Center provides because of the few that made a pit stop to the Brian Coyle Center before they had planned on shooting someone? It just goes to show the connection here, is simply due to the fact that the Coyle Center is utilized by soooo many families, and is one of the few Community Centers in this area, if any. My heart breaks for every family that has been connected in these violent crimes, including the guilty. It only makes me want to worker harder at what i do. These problems occur in any low income neighborhoods. Why would it be any different here? The Somali culture is beautiful, and we as "Americans" could learn a whole lot! The Somali clients that i serve are ambitious hardworking people, again, we as "Americans" could learn a whole lot. Many of the immagrants who came to MN had careers, very successful careers, prior to their homeland being ravished by war. They came to MN for a better life, a new life. Let us not put them in any corners or point any fingers. Let us not shut down, or relocate a Community Center that provides so much assistance to our neighbors. After all, that is what we are, neighbors. And i dont know about you, but i would rather spend my one life on earth getting along with my neighbors, learning from them, teaching them, and accept life for what it is, one big lesson. What contribution are you making? Are you solving problems, or creating new ones?
So, to the person from Medina...you stay out in your little suburban world, wishing that more Somalis, would kill more Somalis. You continue to put your energy into such hateful thoughts and ideas. I feel very sorry for you. Life must really suck for you. Hope you have a nice one sukkka!

Seems we are to blame "no child left behind" for the problems of the Somalis'. Why was this comment included in the article? There was no follow up in the article about whether this was a factual statement. I can only assume the writer included it because its a "GWB" program and after all, aren't all of our social ills caused by "GWB"?
Sorry this was a poorly writeen article.

It is a true fail system for refugees and their families. Of course it contributes to gang violence in our communities. It sets refugees up, whose first language is other than English, for failure in our system."
Many more immigrants succeed in American schools than fail.

Somali culture forces their women to wear ugly ninja outfits every day. Apparently they treat their women as just as good as any other culture though. Guaranteed many Somalian women do not like what they wear.

I have lived in south Minneapolis for 3 years. Somalians are very cordial peaceful people. They have done nothing but treat me with respect. They came from a war torn country and are living the american dream and proving that it is possible! They have overcome obstacles like racism, learning a new language. They open up new businesses and are thriving. They have close knit families that love each other no matter what. Americans could learn a lot from these people.

Everyone seem to have a point. i think what we need to do here is remeber the family of the lost one's and the people who were killed,,,,i think the cole community should get shut down and reopen it somewhere where there is not alot of somali people that leave there honestly, all these shooting are mostly happening where somali people are alot and to a point where you dont know who or whatever the person is from. Second i think united we stand devided we fall, so what the somali community needs to do is help each other and stop the tribe shyt we are in america now know your self as somali person but dnt bring the tribe shyt in here coz it really does not help at all,, i my self never been to somali but do ya know how hard it is for me to claim that am somali, the first thing they say is what is ya tribe and how come you dont speak somali that well, it's not my fault but am happy being somali and thats all i care for, have everyone noticed how somali people are dividing now? everyone hate saying they are somali becouse they are scared, if someone does some wrong and she is somali all her shyt is out there, the more you guys dnt stop talking about the tribe the worse it will get laiter, look how the somali community is now, is it our fault NOOOO, who should we Blame for all these,,,i think our ELDERS,,,,they are the once who got the tribe thing,,,as for the women yes i bet you if it was a somali girl who got shoot am sure they would say why was she there is the first place, i hate how our own ppl put the women down, GOD should be the only one to jurge not somali ppl. all i'm saying is united we stand divided we fall, LETS PUT THE TRIBE ASIDE AND START HELPING EACH OTHER SUCEED, HELP THE ELDER ONCE LEARN ENGLISH, AND LETS NOT FORGOT PRAY TO GOD AND THAT'S WHAT WE SHOULD BE DOING,,,EDUCATE OUR BROTHER AND SISTER AND FORGET THE GAND COME TO REALITY AND SEE HOW BETTER IT WILL GET THE MORE WE IGNORE THE TRIBE. THANK YOU

I thought this article gave some insight to the problems the Somali community is facing. It angers me that all of you anonymous people are so out of touch and fearful of a culture that is different than our "American" culture. To say that all Somali woman are treated unfairly is an inaccurate observation. There are woman in every culture that are treated unfairly. Quit being ignorant and making generalizations about an entire culture.
As far as the no child left behind act goes... I am a teacher that works closely with Somali students and the NCLB act that Mr. Bush has put into place. It is a true fail system for refugees and their families. Of course it contributes to gang violence in our communities. Well..i wouldnt say Islam is the problem here, like i say it advocates for peace although some of wat is taught is violence.Problem aint the older generation but the problem iz the Somali culture as a whole.Nobody wants to report on Somali kids shooting each other and am pretty sure this is what mostly contributes to it...
Like my old man told me when i came to this state..= Son,dont be a fool..this guyz u meet in the streets are gonna plot ya downfall,u dont have to fight for them, but immediately u become their friends,u already dead.I realize they are somali's like me but..if i wanna live,i would rather leave them!

what we trying to comment here? a bunch of gangbangers who happen to be Somali? grieving families? or the subjugation of women? Islamic religion? Bush bashing? No child left behind? failing school system? struggling newcomers? culture shock? violence? gun laws? the article has some insights into the problems many poor immigrant kids face in ghettos.

It isn't right to let the actions of a few represent a whole culture, but the way they treat their women is the same across the entire culture!

To suggest that a whole culture is "backwards" and responsible for such horrible acts of violence is what is ridiculous. You cannot judge a whole culture of people by the actions of just a few.
Like the article stated, Islam advocates for peace and respect not hate and extremism. Please get your facts straight about Islamic beliefs before posting comments like this.

"No Child Left Behind is a stupid law, but to suggest it causes gang violence is ridiculous."
I thought that too. Blame Bush is so passe'.
The common thread throughout this story appears to be the Brian Coyle Community Center. Perhaps the city should shut it down.

No Child Left Behind is a stupid law, but to suggest it causes gang violence is ridiculous.
Maybe it's the Somalian culture that is responsible for this (gasp!). Remember a couple years ago when that Somalian guy brutally beat to the point of nearly killing her, and many Somalians knew about it but were going to leave it to the "elders" to handle it. That's backwards as hell.
They treat their women like 2nd class citizens, we shouldn't be surprised how they treat their enemies.
