Level 13: Secret Level

It began as a series of squares fighting each other to beeps and boops. So it's easy to argue that video games have matured exponentially in aesthetics, story arcs, and overall quality over the past 30 years or so. It's no wonder that artists who grew up playing video games would find inspiration in these pixilated muses. Admittedly, video-game art can be a dodgy artistic subject, running the gamut from cute fridge art by six-year-olds to extremely detailed work intended to supplement someone's delusional fan-fic writing. But rest assured, this is professional art. Over 20 artists and musicians, both local and national, have come together to create installations, visual art, and even a CD inspired by classic video games like Super Mario Bros., Space Invaders, and Donkey Kong. The opening-night party will feature the release of the Level_13 CD, special posters by Burlesque of North America, and live music by Mike the 2600 King and Caly McMorrow. The gallery is open Tuesdays, Thursdays, and Saturdays. Public party 7 p.m. Friday, November 7; artists' discussion panel 1 p.m. Saturday, Novemebr 15.
