What's better than spending a Saturday afternoon watching elite men's college hockey between Minnesota colleges? Watching two elite men's college hockey games between Minnesota colleges! The first game of the WCHA Minnesota Hockey Showcase pits U of M-Duluth against St. Cloud State University at 4:07 p.m. The Huskies, while falling twice early this season to Minnesota, have been riding high in recent years, including back-to-back invitations to the NCAA tournament. The Bulldogs so far this season have been in constant attack mode, scoring seemingly at will. Through their first five games, they went 4-0-1, scoring 24 goals and allowing a measly nine. In the evening matchup, Minnesota State Mankato takes on the University of Minnesota at 7:37 p.m. The Gophers have looked decent in early-season action, squeaking by SCSU twice by one-goal margins and cracking the top 10 in national rankings. In addition to showing off the best college hockey in Minnesota, the Minnesota Hockey Showcase will also show the rest of NCAA Division I hockey conferences the skill level the WCHA is packing this year. After WCHA teams won five straight national championships, they have not even been represented in the NCAA championship game the past two seasons. They're far from being the laughing stock of NCAA hockey, but a display of good, highly competitive hockey will go a long way toward shoring up the WCHA's reputation.
